I'm reading Monica's biography, and I weep when I read how much she cried over the years since she was STABBED IN THE BACK. Before Monica, it was the norm for players to just hit the ball back defensively to only keep it in play. Monica is the first to go for the winner with every shot.

When Monica Seles played tennis in the 90s, I always got my VCR ready. I taped many of her matches and still watch them. You could see her fierce tenacity and concentration in every shot, even when she was sitting on the bench between games.

Monica's crosscourt shots, amplified by her signature exhaltaion/grunt, when the game or set or even the match was on the line were the most fearless shots tennis has ever seen. I know it and I know it for sure. Monica IS THE MOTHER OF MODERN TENNIS. All of the top players make those sounds now!
